Kinja'd!!!

I know most of you north american people have never seen a Primera in the flesh but I have a quick question that some of you might be able to answer, since you probably got the same drivetrain in other cars. Anyway, a friend is looking at a Primera Wagon right now from 1998, that he could buy for around 2,000 NZD. This particula car comes with 1.8l engine and a 4sp auto. The engine is the SR18DE from what I’ve read, since it was available on many Nissan from that era, do you have any idea towards reliability? More info on the car after the jump.

So, this is a 1998 Nissan Primera Wagon, imported from Japan to NZ (the 1.8l was never available here). It looks a lot like the one pictured here, with a few scratch on the body. It has a bit more than 273,000 km on the clock and apparently has been quite reliable. It’s inspection (WOF) is good until September. Current owner has replaced the suspension before he passed the WOF. From what I’ve read this car is kind of the gem no ones thinks about. Also we’re going to go see it on Wednesday late afternoon (so basically, middle of the night for you guys).

If you have any idea on what I should look at on Nissan from this era, please let me know :)

Thanks !

In the meantime, have some old Australian iron !

rust is the biggest issue. Id the Sr18 is anything like the SR20, you should be good for a loonggg time to come.

although, i would also replace the trrans fluid just in case.

SR engines are generally bulletproof. We never got that particular one here in the US, but the similar SR20DE we got was pretty damn unkillable, and a nice little engine.

Isn't there a turbo SR18 in some ridiculous car? I know there's the SR20 but I think the SR18 was like it's baby brother in another car.

Actually, as far as I know these were available in the US. With an Infiniti (G20?) badge. In Europe we obviously got them as the Nissan Primera. No idea about reliability, they were never the best sellers here and very few remain partly due to export to countries where they were better appreciated.

edit: I didn’t see your name at first. No sense in mentioning a Euro situation to you :)

I have no idea about this exact car, but a Nissan of that era should be bulletproof.

Rust is what kills these cars, and I would check that the transmission works like it should. Considered a Primera SRi for my first car myself, but rust, a transmission that didn’t feel good and the general impression that it wasn’t maintained properly made me pass. Bought a well maintained Galant 4x4 with a bad clutch instead.

Well, it’s a JDM car so it’ll rust but mechanically they’re normally reliable enough.

We got them as the Infiniti G20, sort of like a 4-door Sentra SE-R. They were ultra reliable, and only replaced because they decided to replace the G20 with the G35.

I can’t remember the last time I saw one in Europe. I remember it was one of my car of choice in TOCA, allong with the Accord :)

That’s the feeling I got about the engine, so glad it’s confirmed ! Thanks!

I only found that the SR20 was available in a turbocharged version, and that’s the one they put in the mighty Pulsar GTI-R!

Thanks for the advice! I’ll definitely check the rust and tell my friend about the trans fluid.
